When we visited Gillian at home, the kitchen was very much in use. Her three children were gathered around the island, baking and helping with the cooking, while Gillian moved easily between the kitchen and the rest of the room.
It was a glimpse of exactly how she had hoped the space would work: practical, sociable and very much part of family life.
The finished kitchen, however, took a little convincing.
Gillian had fallen for the idea of a pink kitchen, although she wasn’t sure whether her husband would agree. Thankfully, he loves it too. The shade is a soft, dusky pink rather than anything too sugary, bringing warmth and personality to the room without overpowering it.
The layout presented a bigger challenge. Gillian had always wanted an island with space to sit and, having spoken to three other kitchen companies, had been told that it simply wasn’t possible.
Jamie, Romerils’ kitchen designer, took a different approach.
Working with the proportions of the room, he found a way to make the island work, creating the breakfast bar Gillian had originally imagined while also giving the kitchen a stronger sense of structure.
It has become one of the most important features of the design. Rather than simply providing somewhere to perch, the island creates a subtle architectural divide between the kitchen and living area. The two spaces feel defined, but remain completely connected.
Storage was another consideration, with the cabinetry taken right up to the ceiling to make the most of every available inch. It also gives the kitchen a clean, uninterrupted look, making the most of the room’s full height.
Silestone Persian White worktops keep the pink scheme feeling light and contemporary, paired with an undermounted sink and polished drainer grooves. A gold Franke pull-out spray tap adds warmth, while the textured tiles bring depth and interest behind the hob.
“I was worried it would be dark, but it’s so light and fresh,” says Gillian.
From Design to Installation
For Gillian, having everything coordinated through Romerils made the whole process feel straightforward. Jamie designed the kitchen, coordinated the project and fitting team, Martin carried out the survey, Razvan handled the installation, Charlie the electrics, and Jersey Monumental Company supplied and fitted the worktops. Gillian was particularly impressed by the care, professionalism and quality of everyone involved, highlighting the benefit of having one connected team guiding the project from initial design through to the finished kitchen.
At the centre of the room sits a cream Belling Farmhouse 90 Induction, chosen for a more personal reason. It reminds Gillian of the AGA in her mother’s kitchen. The contrasting black hood adds definition, giving the cooking area a stronger focal point.
Then there are the practical details that make the kitchen work day after day. Gillian particularly loves the generous double fridge freezer and the extra-large cutlery drawer. Small considerations, but the details that make a noticeable difference when a kitchen is being used by a busy family.
What makes the finished space work so well is the balance between personality and practicality. The pink brings character, the island brings everyone together, and the storage keeps the room feeling calm and uncluttered.
It is a kitchen designed to look good, but more importantly, one designed around the way the family actually lives.
